Why do we give in to self-pity?

I’d like to know why our society must deal with people that “cut themselves” or attempt suicide. To me it’s just crying for attention but instead of leaving the poor saps be with their miserable lives we want to comfort them and help them. Why is that? Like for instance, there was a questions asking for help to stop cutting himself. Some guy posted that he felt sorry for the kid and wanted to help. For what? It’s nothing but attention these people seek and by giving it to them we are further more destroying themselves.
Another example would be Jon Gosselin. Why does he keep showing up on my news channel? I don’t care about him suing TLC, I could careless what that moron does but why is it that people think he is a victim when he is some celebrity now? It makes no sense to me what so ever. If someone can fill me in on the society’s interest to keep people though loathe themselves so much that we the people that seem to be in the real pain with the economy must give a helping hand for.
(I sounds heartless, I maybe but I had to ask)

Do unto others as you would like them yo do unto you.It is great thus far you haven’t needed help or sympathy just remember no man is man is a island by himself.Remember every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess thus far you have been fortunate.Prayers go up and blessings come down.
The reason is because a lot of us feel the way these people do but don’t act on it. They actually have the balls to express themselves, and therefore people gravitate towards them. It is called empathy. In a weird way we may actually be living our own pain through them.
Why are you asking us? It looks like you know all the answers!
Your perspective “seems” heartless to most people because most people are caught up in the delusional notions of life… or the illusion of life as opposed to the Reality of Life.
If truly interested, then you can learn a bit about the concept of the Law of Karma in the first source I place below. The vast majority of people are guided by their MINDs, and this means they are limited in how much “Conscience” or “Knowledge” of the Reality of Life they possess. Ones MIND is dedicated to one being caught up in the illusion of life, and this generally means one is confused about life and worried about almost everything one perceives.
Rare are those Souls that perceive life from a more objective point of view, as you apparently do. To see the absurdity of life and to resist being pulled into the illusion of life is a “gift” one has earned by having lived many lifetimes and successfully completed a substantial amount of Karma. The completion of ones Karma results in an increase in ones Spiritual Evolution, which means an ability to perceive the “Purpose of Life” more clearly…. but not so clearly that one is completely removed from the necessity of being here.
As for pity, it is exceedingly beneficial to grieve for the painfulness of life… but this is best done in private…. so as to not cause one to be seen as pitiful. That some people “act out” this sense of pain and sorrow merely suggests that they have not achieved sufficient “insight” to do so in private.
Do not judge yourself ["heartless"] but simply accept that you do not “need” to do what others do to be OK. Oddly enough, the more Spirituality one acquires [earns], the less one is caught up in the illusion of life, and the more clearly one sees that Life is merely people playing out the result of their own Karma.

The people that cut themselves and attempt suicide are actually not anyone but you. We’re all one. We’re all in this together.
