Question by Monica: What do you think of this story?
“Damn it! Where’s my brush?” Elisha Carpenter scolded as she fumbled around her red Kate Spade tote.
She let out an agonized sigh. All she saw in her purse was a scrunchy, mascara, lipgloss, a silver compact mirror, her iPhone, and an iPod. Everything seemed to be there but her favorite hairbrush.
Just then Reese McKinley, Savannah Ripley, and Demi Pohoryles entered the girls’ bathroom Elisha smiled in relief when she saw her three friends.
“Have you got a hairbrush?” Elisha asked no one in particular.
“Yeah, sure.” Reese said, reaching into her bag for a purple brush.
Elisha smiled a thanks and took the brush out of her hand. She brushed her dark-blond hair that curled at the middle of her back. She was feeling pretty that day. Her mascara brought her caramel-eyes and her toned skin glowed in the sun’s rays.
“Spring Break 09!” Demi cheered, taking out her lipgloss and applying it on her full lips.
“God, it’s been so long.” Elisha said blissfully. “I’m just glad Spring Break is coming. I bought a new swimsuit last week.”
“So did I.” Demi said. “It’s a green strapless that ties at the back. The boys will be loving some Dems in that bikini.”
Elisha laughed. Demi loved getting attention from boys. Most people would think Jen Nguyen, the most sought after girl in the school, would crave attention from boys. But they were wrong. Demi was like a black widow searching for her victim. Elisha couldn’t quite blame the boys for falling into her trap. Demi was cute in a unique way. Even though she had a funny shaped mouth, a chin that jutted out when she smiled, and braces on her bottom teeth; she was still attractive. Also her body helped out a lot.
“Hansen is working on my last nerves.” Reese complained, leaning over to check for flyaway hair. “I can’t stand her.”
“Plus she’s fat.” Demi said.
“She is not!” Savannah defended. “She’s pregnant.”
“Still fat.” Demi said. “Besides, she gave you a ‘D’ on your oral test. I’d hate her, if I were you.”
Savannah shook her head. “I was a little haughty on my speech, though. I should have been more prepared.”
Reese scoffed. “She shouldn’t pick on you for being nervous. Everyone knows you’re shy. She should have given you the benefit of the doubt.”
“I couldn’t agree more.” Elisha put in. “Biology is the only class you’re during horrible in.”
“Algebra too.” Savannah said. “I’m pulling a ‘C’ in that class.”
“That’s still decent. It’s better than a forty-eight percent.”
Savannah shot her look, but Elisha wasn’t sorry. She agreed with her best friend Holly about Savannah needing to work harder in Biology. It was one of the most important courses in high school. Her college credits were depending on it.
On the other hand, Elisha was doing excellent in her classes. She only had one ‘B’ and that was in Health. The rest were all ‘A’s. She always used to her spare time to do homework or projects. She figured if she got done with her work sooner, the more time she had to party.
“No, Vanny, you’re doing it all wrong.” she said suddenly, walking over to Savannah who was trying to apply mascara. “Only a little bit at a time. Don’t swipe it so fiercely. You’ll poke your eyes out. Here; let me show you.”
She took out a fresh tube of dark mascara and gently swiped it across Savannah’s long eyelashes. Elisha knew Savannah could apply on makeup, but she just wanted to make sure that she was doing it properly. Sometimes Savannah could go overboard with gloss and eyeshadow. A girl always needed a second-eye for that kind of activity. Savannah was lucky to be such a classically beautiful girl. Or else she would look like a prostitute with all that makeup caked on. And Savannah so rarely needed makeup at all.
Elisha noticed that her burgundy Abercrombie sweater went perfect with her medium-brown skin. What really made Savannah stand out were her almond-shaped eyes. They were the first thing a person noticed about her. Elisha felt like training her friends into being models. She always either wanted to be a politician or a model agent. Being a politician sounded important, but a model agent sounded more exciting. She still couldn’t figure out what she wanted to be. At least she had four more three more years to figure it out.
“Hey,” Reese said, turning around to face her. “Do you have notes for Mrs. Kramer’s Algebra class.”
“Oh, yeah.” Elisha said, reaching into her backpack for a packet. “I have them all copied and ready for you. Enjoy.”
“Thanks.” Reese said as they exited the restroom. “Kramer is gonna kill me if I don’t have these in b
